Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge
July 12-14 – Portland
Elite track cyclists will converge at the 14th annual Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge, a three-day racing extravaganza. Some of the world’s fastest racers come to this event for an opportunity to hit speeds up to 50 miles per hour.
Most velodromes are indoors; the Velodrome Challenge attracts 100 national and international athletes, Olympians and local riders eager to compete for track records and big cash prizes on this unique concrete outdoor track. This event boasts one of the largest prize lists in North America with over $13,000 in cash and prizes.
Competitors can enter different styles of races, but the spectator favorite is the Keiran, a wild race that has up to eight riders following a motorcycle for the initial portion of the race. Riders are not allowed to pass the motorcycle and have to jockey for the best lead position. In the last leg of the race, the motorcycle pulls off the track and racers sprint at full speed to the finish line – making this race the fastest of any event on the track.
It’s free to watch the Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge and the event features vendors and a cool race watching arena.
Start times vary by race, see website for details // Alpenrose Velodrome, 6149 Southwest Shattuck Rd. in Portland
