The Elements of Production. We kick off 2018 with the production of the next, and final DreamRide instalment. Once again Filming bike movies in the middle of winter is sure to be business as usual… a few buddies getting all sorts of weird in wild places. Off to find another never ending trail! Coming from a skiing background this sequence (shown in DreamRide2) had been festering in the back of my mind for years. I always wondered if it would be possible to make biking actually look realistic/fun on snow? Would it be possible to capture a similar magic that skis provide? To achieve this I knew that we needed the action to mimic that of skiing, and let’s be honest what would a day on the hill be without slashing turns and bombing uncontrollably through the trees! Luckily as we scheduled this shoot, @revelstoke experienced a melt freeze cycle followed by a week of high pressure… the exact conditions we were after. The melt freeze laid a solid icy layer throughout the hill making it dense and hard enough for the spikes on my tyres to bite into. We chose a few highly trafficked runs through the trees to ensure the snow would be firm, and with @peacock_david right on my tail wrestling a movi and negotiating some seriously questionable terrain at pace, our winter dreams began to take shape. For the second portion of the sequence we made the trek to Abraham Lake in Alberta which is famous for its frozen methane bubbles. We thought this scene would lend itself well to the film but after a light dusting of snow, fogged the upper layer of ice our hopes of filming this oddity were dashed. But when life gives you lemons, you make the trek into an ice canyon and ride off frozen waterfalls. Our crew really came together on this shoot and at the end of the day, I don’t think any of us can actually believe we pulled it off. I dragged @peacock_david and @scott_secco all over the place on this one and believe me the temperatures were not friendly (between -12 & -20 Celsius). The entire crew really went above and beyond on this entire project, this is just an example. We are currently working on an extended winter cut that will show you the locations that were left on the cutting room floor.
