Hood River Area Trail Stewards Update: A Closure, Some Openings, A Movie, A Shuttle, and A Fundraiser!

Simple HRATS Logo

Hello Trail Lovers,

Below you’ll find some useful information about happenings and ways to help!

Whoopdee Closure:

For the Whoopdee enthusiasts, Green Diamond’s scheduled timber harvest has moved up. The Whoopdee will be closed for at least three weeks while they work in the NorthWest area, which may allow us trail users (this means you) the opportunity to fine-tune some sections of the climb out. Unfortunately, for those who hate ending on an uphill, we will be unable to reverse this. We’ll keep you posted on its reopening.

Mitchell Ridge is Open:

A small but effective work party worked on Mitchell Ridge on Sunday morning. The trail is cleared enough for HRC to open it for all of you to ride. Please be aware that a lot of the new dirt is very soft and may be hard to ride at a significant speed. The repaired sections need significant rain before detailed berm work can be finished. Ride and enjoy it, though.

“170 Dirt Surfer” Is Open:

HRATS and HRC have reported that “Lower 170” is closed. This is still true, but the trail most Mt Bikers call “Dirt Surfer” is not called “Lower 170”. HRC’s official name for “Dirt Surfer” is “170 Dirt Surfer”. “Lower 170” is the right turn-off of “170 Dirt Surfer” in the woods, as shown below.

Our trail repair and building season is upon us:

We’re focusing on three big priorities for the fall: trail work to rebuild some of the trails damaged during Whiskey Creek mitigation efforts, completion of Cake Walk in Family Man with new wooden features, and completion of the Whoopdee extension. The latter two will require additional funds, and we’re putting on a few fundraisers to generate the ~$20,000 required.

Fire Lines Movie Screening & Filmmaker Discussion, Friday 10/11:

  • Join us for a screening of an excellent film about the intersection of mountain bike trails and wildfire. It was developed by local filmmaker, Gordon Klco, in collaboration with Patagonia. There will be a moderated discussion with Gordon after the showing. You can check it out on the Patagonia website.
  • Co-presented by HRATS and the Hood River Forest Collaborative
  • 6PM at The Ruins. Doors open at 5:30 PM.
  • Suggested donation of $20 at the Door
  • Adults only please

Fall Shuttle Day, Saturday 10/12:

  • Our annual fall fundraiser is back! Come out for a day of climb-free riding!
  • 9am – 2pm, Post Canyon Dr where the pavement ends.
  • $45 suggested donation for a full day of shuttling.
  • Rides provided by five local companies.
  • HRATS board members will be there loading bikes and running sign ups. Come by to chat about our upcoming work.
  • Not into the shuttle thing? We could use volunteers – reach out to Campbell.Morrissy@gmail.com if you’re interested.

The opportunities continue to present themselves to build and repair our trails, and we’ve been on a roll. However, the need for funding is real. As mentioned, we have more work planned for the fall but need another round of fundraising to make it happen. To jumpstart the process, we’ve been offered a very generous anonymous matching donation of $5,000! If we can raise $5,000 at any of these events, we get another $5,000 guaranteed. That is a huge boost to these efforts. Thanks for your continued support. https://hrats.org/fundraising/donations/

And don’t forget, our area desperately needs people willing to maintain the trails, mostly brushing and drainage. If you have any time, please reply to this email: volunteers@hrats.org.

Thanks for reading,

HRATS
